This paper explores the impact of education and English skills on the improvement of health in relation to an individual's country of birth. We specifically emphasize the nonlinearity between education and health in U.S.-born and foreign-born populations, as well as direct and indirect effects of obtaining English skills in the promotion of health among the Hispanic population using The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). NHANES has collected information on the health status of the population of the United States since 1963.

520 $a We analyzed health quasi-production functions that relate health to education, English skills, and variables that are not endogenous inputs into the production of health. Health was measured as both subjective self-reported overall health and objective indexed biological risk factors and a body mass index. We found that education has a greater impact on improving health for the foreign-born population, particularly the Mexico-born, compared to the US-born population.
520 $a We also found mixed evidence of English speaking abilities in the promotion of health depending on the measurement of health. On self-reported overall health status, the direct effects of English skills in promoting health exceeded the unfavorable indirect effects. We note that immigrant populations are likely to experience a change in their self-assessment of overall health because of cultural and peer effects when considering their standard of health. In the measurement of biological risks and body mass index, we found unfavorable indirect effects correlated with English skills outweighed the beneficial effects of learning English in the promotion of health. As the Hispanic population acquired and employed more English, they may have tended to acquire unhealthy aspects of American life style, in particular poor dietary habits and low physical activity, which related to increased biological risk factors, offsetting the health-related benefits facilitated by English mastery. In terms of the body mass index, with English skills as a proxy for increased acculturalization, they acquired poorer dietary habit and/or became less physically active.
