Students' reasons for particular vocational training choice are influenced by many variables and a significant number of those who attend career vocational classes at the Fairmount School District's vocational training institution tend to move from vocational class to vocational class or leave the vocational school entirely. Recent statistical data taken from the site reveals over a three year period 22% will have left their original choice of vocational class or decided to return to an academic track. The researcher believes it is critically important for students and teachers alike to understand how the students' educational choices are made and how they match her/his abilities and aptitude, in order to establish a viable vocational pathway and appropriate student-to-program fit.

It was hypothesized that although the school district employs a variety of methods to introduce vocational programs to parents and students, the current approach to exploring various careers may not be meeting students' educational needs, or be necessarily important in student's career decision-making.

The nexus of community versus individual benefit will be explored as a component of the investigation. Theories of social reproduction, developed by authors Apple, Bourdieu and Willis will also be considered to assess their potential application to career exploration education.
