My dissertation, Dreaming in Other Languages: On the Performance of Autobiographical Narrative as Decolonizing Pedagogy, is a series of four detailed case studies of pedagogies that center the performance of autobiographical narrative. I argue that storytelling, manifested in dance, theater, poetry, and dreaming performs a decolonizing function on individual, cultural, and universal levels by: one, allowing individuals to heal through integrating their lived experiences; and two, providing opportunities in group settings to learn about the experiences of others. I argue that decolonizing pedagogies de-center hegemonic languages while dignifying subalternized modes of communication, including languages of the body and the unconscious. These pedagogies also consider culture as a complicated context, as opposed to something that is fixed, or something that one must necessarily be contained by. In this project, I employ performance, ethnic, and cultural studies, along with studies in critical pedagogy and psychology. These tools help me to analyze and contextualize interviews with educators and artists who are creating new traditions, or relevant rooting practices, that encourage individuals to fulfill their full potential while also having respectful and benevolent interactions with others.
