The problem. In the United States, there are only a few computerized diagnosis systems for acupuncturists. By contrast, in most Oriental countries, exposure to computerization is routinely included in Chinese medical diagnosis. The major concern of the study was to determine the general state of use of computers in traditional Chinese medical diagnosis today, short-term plans for inclusion and implementation and driving forces/restraining forces influencing computerization and acupuncturists' attitudes toward computerized diagnosis in the practice of traditional Chinese medicine in California.

Two questionnaires were developed; the instrument was designed to solicit data in four specific areas: (1) demographic data, (2) computer background and experience, (3) attitudes toward a computerized diagnosis system in the practice of traditional Chinese medicine, and (4) problems, difficulties, and acupuncturists' opinions concerning the trends of the computerized diagnosis system. Data obtained from the questionnaires were analyzed by using the SPSS program.

The results. The data showed that on the whole the respondents favored a computer aided diagnosis system for use in the practice of traditional Chinese medicine. Also, this study indicated that there was a good environment for the progress of a computerized diagnosis system in traditional Chinese medicine.
