The aim of this study was to assess the findings of an historical exploration of the occurrences and perceptions of servant leadership characteristics as defined by Paterson (2003) within the operations of an African American, multi-generational family-owned funeral home. An emphasis on the historical significance of an African American funeral home's meaning to the community being served is one way to understand the extraordinary value that the Black community places on community cohesion, mutual accountability, and status making.

520 $a To answer the research questions, qualitative and quantitative methodologies were used. The sampling for the researcher designed surveys included owners, employees, and select stakeholders of the funeral home to measure their perceptions of servant leadership practices both internally and externally. One hundred seven anonymous, random, funeral home client respondents completed a standardized funeral industry survey which measured overall characteristics of client experiences with the funeral home. Descriptive statistics and historical research methodologies were used in the analysis of the data.
520 $a The conclusive implications were that an African American owned funeral home serving a predominantly African American community is a meaningful social and cultural institution. Black funeral directors at Royal Funeral Home display characteristics of servant leadership that those they serve value and respect. These characteristics engender generational loyalty among the funeral home clients throughout the community.
