Thesis (Ph.D.)--Fuller Theological Seminary, School of Psychology, 1999.
Kubler-Ross' theory of stages of dying profoundly influenced the thanatology literature and subsequently assumed a central place in the death studies of the 1970s and 1980s. The author of this study places Kubler-Ross within the context of historical events and psychologists' interest in death and mourning issues. She provides an annotated bibliography of Kubler-Ross' publications and detailed book review of On Death & Dying (1969). This investigator discusses the methodology of citation analysis and presents an empirical analysis of her influence on the literature by analyzing citations of her work in four scientific journals from the years 1970 through 1997. She examined data about the frequency of citations of Kubler-Ross' work using trend analysis. She also examined descriptive data about the nature of the citations to further understanding of how Kubler-Ross' theory has been used by researchers in thanatology. The results indicate that authors cited Kubler-Ross with greatest frequency in the mid 1970s after her major publication, with frequency of citations declining in the mid 1980s. The author analyzed book reviews of On Death and Dying and positive uses of Kubler-Ross' stage theory in academic publications to demonstrate the breadth and depth of her influence on death studies. The author also compares frequency of citation of Kubler-Ross' work with that of other thanatology theorists, establishing that Kubler-Ross became more widely known by culture than her contemporaries. The author also examined the history of death studies in American culture in the context of historical events and movements that have influenced culture's interest in and approach to death-related issues. She then analyzes Kubler-Ross' unique role and function in the field of thanatology. Finally, the author summarizes varying critiques of Kubler-Ross's research methodology and stage theory, including theoretical disagreements and concerns over the application of her theory, concluding with a discussion of the value and purpose of theories of dying.
