Thesis (M.S.)--University of South Alabama, 2008.
An investigation into speech controlled interfaces in noisy environments for Human-Robotic interaction is discussed. This is a topic that is rapidly becoming more relevant as speech controlled applications and devices become more prevalent. Currently, most speech interfaces require a fairly noise free environment for deployment. In addition, training of the speech interface to recognize the voice and speech characteristics of a single person is often required for a satisfactory user experience by particular individual. This research identified the technology currently available for the development of speech applications and determined that the current off-the-shelf technology (COTS) does lend itself to the development and deployment of a speech enabled interface to a robotic tour guide that can be deployed in a noisy environment such as an outdoor campus location without requiring training for each individual user of the system. Constraints and limitations of the technology were identified and potential areas for further research were explored.
