This thesis includes my memoir of learning to use an "outside" view of a new culture as I learned its language. I share ideas for learning and teaching a second language drawn from my experience of cultural alienation and identity crisis when I was an L2 learner and instructor at Truman State University. I suggest that L2 teachers can use an "outside" view to help their students acquire, rather than learn, a second language. Having the "outside" view means modifying teachers' perspectives to reflect the students' lack of understanding of the culture of the second language. In order to give students opportunities to grow and acquire language, L2 teachers should provide an authentic context that is familiar, interesting and meaningful for students; students can use these different cultural views and perspectives to acquire the new language. When we discover a second language in this way, we can also discover ourselves.
