Thesis (M.A.)--Long Island University, The Brooklyn Center, 2008.
This thesis examines the relationship between language, thought, and culture. In this thesis there is a thorough discussion of the Linguistic Relativity Hypothesis, as it was proposed by Benjamin Lee Whorf. In its strongest form this hypothesis argues that language determines thought and by implication, people speaking distinctly different languages correspondingly think in different ways. Also, there is a review of a variety of cross-cultural studies that demonstrate that while a strong version of linguistic relativity is not viable, a weaker version, suggesting that language may influence thought, can be supported. Finally, the thesis concludes with a discussion of the way in which culture and schooling may be a more fruitful way to understand the nature of human cognition.
