This study examined instructor communication strategies affecting course persistence in a community college. Based upon Alfred Adler's psychological construct of encouragement, a survey instrument was developed and conducted using a stratified randomly selected cluster research design (N=640). Factor analysis identified two factors consistent with Adlerian principles, engagement and student affirmation. This study adds to the research of the effects of encouragement on adult students. The survey findings showed behaviors such as honesty, genuineness, recognition of achievement, support and suggestions for improvement, personalized attention, acceptance, and respect to be perceived as encouraging for community college students. A relationship between the factors and course persistence could not be found due to the small number of drops in the classes surveyed. Further research in a college setting with a larger drop rate is needed to establish the potency of encouragement to course persistence.
