This study investigated the reliability and validity of the Encouragement Scale (General Form) (E-D-G) which is based upon the theoretical principles of encouragement formulated by Alfred Adler. This conceptual model of encouragement is comprised of four elements, which form the four subscales of the E-D-G Scale: View of Self, View of Others, Openness to Experience, and Sense of Belonging.Subjects--Topical Terms:

520 $a The findings of this study showed a high level of reliability, both in terms of internal consistency and temporal stability for the E-D-G fullscale. Additionally, the four subscales also demonstrated moderately high to high levels of internal consistency and temporal stability.
520 $a Construct validity was assessed both in terms of convergent and discriminant validity. Convergent validity was assessed by correlating the E-D-G fullscale and its subscales with four theoretically-related instruments: The Beck Hopelessness Scale, the Hope Scale, the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, and the Tasks of Life Survey. Relationships between the E-D-G fullscale and each of the four subscales were related as hypothesized.
520 $a Discriminant validity was assessed by comparing E-D-G fullscale and subscale scores across the demographic variables of: age, sex, and year in college. No relationship was found between E-D-G fullscale and subscale scores and these variables, with one exception. Females scored significantly higher than males on the View of Others subscale. The link between this finding and related research literature on sex differences is examined.
