Thesis (M.F.A.)--California State University, Long Beach, 2007.
I am interested in creating a world that thrills and delights through illustrations that explore the darker side of fables, folktales, nursery rhymes and other stories. In the spirit of these enticingly scary stories, I portrayed a host of characters for the project "Frightfully Fun," which are both appealing and alarming. As in the natural world, the creatures are often entangled in predator/prey relationships. Traditionally such perils have been used as metaphors in children's literature to teach them about dangers they may encounter as they go out into the world. However, my primary goal for my work is not to urge caution or imply a warning. For me, the images I create are meant to entertain and possibly encourage one to face one's fears. They celebrate the fun of a spine-tingling adventure for young and old.
