Thesis (M.S.)--University of Puerto Rico, Mayaguez (Puerto Rico), 2009.
Although on-line automated process information about fermentation biomass, substrates and products is required to improve the monitoring techniques such as process optimization and achieve a better understanding of the process. The significant and vital information is limited for to date processes. While many chemical and physical measurements are measurable at-line, others such as the concentration of analytes are difficult to determine and often required considerable pre-processing of the samples. Chemometrics use the analytical techniques such as infrared spectroscopy and multivariable statistic to offers the opportunity to improve the fermentation processes by incorporating rapid, nondestructive, and multi-constituent analysis of fermentation broth media.

Our main focus is to assess and correlate the NIR, IR and Raman spectra with multivariate techniques such as Partial Least Squares (PLS) to monitor the critical variables in a microbial fermentation such as recombinant protein synthesis, analyte and biomass concentrations.
