Known as a teaching and learning approach, service-learning engages the key stakeholders (educational institutions, students, and the community) in an educational, civic, and community strengthening activity (National Commission on Service-Learning, 2002). Service-learning provides students with the opportunity to meet needs in the community, as well as assisting youth in developing as responsible citizens (Melchior, 1999). It also allows students to become change agents as they contribute to their own community (Kenny, Simon, Kiley-Brabeck, & Lerner, 2002).

Critical components of service-learning are evaluation and reflection. Evaluation is vital to growth and program development. Evaluation as a shared, collaborative process is critical in service-learning to help administrators determine and understand the effects and impact of service on the community. In service-learning, a limited number of research studies involving community participation exist (Boyle-Baise, Epler, & McCoy, 2001). The work that is shared and completed with the community is an important part of service-learning (Shumer, 1997a), and is necessary for effective collaboration.

This research study was designed to (a) determine the impact of service on community organizations as a result of service-learning, and (b) engage participants in reflecting on the impact of service-learning on the community. Community organizations, connected to educational service-learning programs, were identified and invited to participate in a Service-Learning Impact Survey and a focus group in order to determine the impact of service-learning on the community. Overall impact on the community was evaluated by the following service-learning program components: coordination and input, goals and objectives, training and supervision, and evaluation and reflection. The results of this study indicate that service-learning positively impacts the community in terms of meeting needs. Networking was found to be a valuable community connection with service-learning. Consistent collaboration with the community partners in the service-learning process from assessment to evaluation and reflection was identified as important. Student volunteers were recognized as a valuable component of the service-learning program, and participants expressed the need for consistency in time and commitment on the part of the student volunteers. This research demonstrated that the continuous impact of service-learning on the community can be met through ongoing service projects, rather than sporadic and episodic events. Implications and further research are included.
