520 $a The purpose of this study was to examine whether a student's self concept will change significantly as a result of participating in a service learning or community service project.
520 $a Data was collected through pretesting and posttesting of secondary school students using the Multidimensional Self Concept Scale (MSCS). Three intact classes of students in grades 10-12 participated in the six-week duration of the project. Group one, the control group, was given the MSCS as a pretest and posttest. Group two was given the MSCS as a pretest followed by specifically planned classroom activities which prepared them for the service learning activity. The group was then chaperoned to a local nursing facility where students worked with nursing home residents. Reflection activity followed the participants' experiences. Group three was pretested and posttested and then participated in the community service activity. They did not experience the classroom and reflection activities.
520 $a Data was analyzed using multivariate analysis of variance and the Wilks' Lambda statistic. It was found there was no statistical difference in the global self concept scores of students after participating in the service learning or community service project.
