- 38 p.
Adviser: Kelly Ritter.
Thesis (M.A.)--Southern Connecticut State University, 2008.
First year English composition has been a fixture within many universities in the United States for over one hundred years. First year writing, as a course requirement, imposes large investments in time for both students and teachers; it also demands significant investments in capital toward the administration of composition programs. This is an historical examination of the connection between Harvard University, which instituted first year composition in 1874, and the efficiency movement embodied by Frederick Taylor and scientific management. Taylor's work and the ideology of efficiency complemented a form of composition pedagogy known as Current-traditional rhetoric which focuses on the mechanical aspects of student writing such as grammar and spelling often at the expense of content and critical thinking. Harvard was a central location for the Current-traditional rhetoric, first year composition, and the ideas of efficiency promoted by Frederick Taylor.
