Thesis (M.A.)--Royal Roads University (Canada), 2007.
This action research study focused on understanding intergenerational differences, their impact, and influence within the organizational culture of the Moose Jaw Police Service (MJPS), as well as their effects on the ability to deliver services to the community. The study participants were active members in the MJPS, which is representative of the majority of police services in Canada. The study findings characterize the systemic issues creating role conflict, limited opportunity to experience different forms of work within the organization, conflicting values between preferred leadership styles of different generations within the MJPS, and the organizational challenges of creating realistic opportunities to achieve and sustain a reasonable state of work-life balance. For sustainable change, the research indicates the MJPS needs to adopt a systemic approach to problem solving through the development of an interactive process of dialogue and collaboration that promotes consensus building among key stakeholders.
