Thesis (M.A.)--California State University, Long Beach, 2008.
Archaeological data suggests the Cotzumalguapa Nuclear Zone (CNZ), located on the south coast of Guatemala, is a large scale planned prehistoric community. The majority of the 10-km2 deposit, however, lies beneath a thick volcanic ash layer, leaving the structure of this deposit largely unknown. This study uses ground penetrating radar (GPR) to map the sub-surface near El Baul, one of the main acropolises in the CNZ, in order to examine the spatial relationship of architectural features. The degree of spatial patterning of group-scale artifacts located within the GPR data is used to measure the scale and magnitude of social organization within this deposit. Variance-to-mean ratios are calculated at different scales to measure the scale at which spatial patterning exists at El Baul. This thesis demonstrates the scale of spatial patterning at El Baul and the importance of the CNZ as a Late Classic urban center on the south Guatemalan coast.
