Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Virginia, 2007.
In this dissertation, I investigate houses to identify symbolic communication of social differences within the indigenous sites of Arslantepe and Tepe Gawra located in northern Mesopotamia during the Late Chalcolithic period (ca 4300-3000 BC). The dissertation has three interrelated objectives - the first is to investigate the constitution of houses in terms of their architectural design, construction and use of space. The second uses these results to examine the degree of social differentiation at these sites. A study of ritual expressions within houses serves to better understand the connection between ritual and social differentiation. A comparison of houses and temples provides further insight into the use of ritual in prestige systems.

An investigation of canonical principles in architectural design, construction, and use at Arslantepe and Tepe Gawra suggest that socio-cosmological principles were used by the inhabitants of houses. The integrative architectural analysis shows that messages about social differences, status, and social unity were communicated through an intentional interplay of canonical and indexical. The analysis of ritual-architectural elements within the houses in these sites showed that access to ritual knowledge and performance played an important role as the basis for social differences at Arslantepe and Tepe Gawra. Access to ritual, ancestor veneration, having a long line, house continuity, and possession of inalienable items were valued as signs of differential status and formed a basis for social power.
