The purpose of this investigation was to examine the effect of Cued Speech on tracking performance by deaf college students who had long-term exposure to cues. Tracking is the verbatim repetition by a receiver of a text presented by a speaker, a phrase at a time. The procedure is timed, and a words-per-minute score is obtained. Results indicated that the reception of connected speech was considerably more efficient with cues than without. The mean tracking rate for cued material was two times that of uncued material. The effect of the introduction of a novel speaker varied from subject to subject, but was generally minimal. In addition, texts of two levels of complexity were tracked with comparable efficiency, though easier texts were tracked somewhat faster than the more difficult texts. The findings in this investigation supported those of earlier Cued Speech research in that the use of cues facilitated the reception of spoken language to a considerable degree. This study also demonstrated that cues enhanced the efficiency of reception of connected discourse.Subjects--Topical Terms:
