Thesis (Psy.D.)--Pepperdine University, 2008.
Early studies of Vietnam veterans show increased rates of death from accidents, suicide, and other external causes compared to the general population. Recent studies indicate increases in health related problems in veterans with Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). This follow-up of a 2003 study compares rates and causes of death among 1,866 Vietnam combat veterans treated for PTSD. Death certificates obtained for 325 veterans indicate death occurred from behavioral causes in 46.5% of cases compared to an expected 9.3% for the age-adjusted general population. Since the original study, a change in mortality rates from behavioral to natural causes has occurred for these veterans. Results suggest changes in PSTD treatment, targeting high-risk behavior patterns and addressing this population's high mortality rates.
