The purpose of this study was to inquire into perceptions of preadolescent Christian spirituality and self-identity in Singapore. To nurture preadolescents' spirituality, leaders from both churches concurred that church and home have their respective roles. In regards to the church's contribution to nurturing preadolescents' spirituality, leaders identified their respective church ministry approaches. The church programs were considered by adults to be the avenues of learning and knowing God. There was limited awareness, on the leaders' part, that instructional approaches and context were contributing factors to spiritual growth. Although the ministry approaches of these two churches were dissimilar, leaders' understanding of preadolescents' spirituality was no different.

The findings revealed five factors that were present in leaders' descriptions of preadolescents' spirituality: (1) Children who listened were considered to give evidence of spiritual growth; (2) Children who spoke up were perceived as indicators of learning and growing; (3) Children's involvement in ministry evidenced growth in the Christian faith; (4) Children were growing spiritually when they memorized Bible verses; and (5) Children who had devotional times with their parents were considered growing in the Christian faith. A mature preadolescent self-identity was described by leaders as being attentive to teachers and respectful of friends; being restrained in speech; and having an awareness and acknowledgment of a personal and spiritual self.

From the preadolescents' perceptions of their church experiences, God-images and self-identity, the findings showed five factors present in their descriptions of spirituality: (1) The church was perceived as a place of learning about the Christian faith; (2) They showed readiness to use religious language in their knowledge and understanding of God; (3) They had personal experiences with God; (4) They were able to draw on Christian concepts in their expressions and experiences of God; and (5) Their self-identity had strong connections with significant others, God and studies.
