Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Colorado at Boulder, 2009.
This thesis presents results in the modeling of ionospheric currents and electric fields at low latitudes. Understanding these important processes is required for the study of many other ionospheric phenomena. The work presented here pioneered the global climatological modeling of the equatorial electrojet (EEJ) system as well as the estimation of the eastward equatorial electric field (EEF) based on magnetometer measurements from various satellite missions. Remarkably, knowledge of only the magnetic field enables the calculation of so many other important ionospheric parameters. I present studies which use this high quality magnetic field data to extract high accuracy estimates of the global structure of the EEJ and EEF which play a central role in the electrodynamics of the ionosphere.
