In the Old World, various types of megalithic remains are widely distributed, stretching from Western Europe to the islands of the Pacific. Research on megalithic culture began more than a century ago in various parts of the Old World, but only recently have scholars become interested in the interpretation and chronology of these megalithic cultures.

This study of megalithic culture in West Malaysia continues a tradition of archaeological inquiry started in the first quarter of this century. The main focus of this study is the megalithic tradition in the Kuala Pilah District. The primary method used to gather data was intensive surface survey to locate sites for registration and inventory. Excavations were undertaken at one site in an attempt to gather stratified archaeological information for analysis and interpretation.
