Concerns about child and adolescent obesity are increasing. Given the importance of preventing child and adolescent obesity and the health problems that go with it, this study identified factors both within and outside the context of school that were associated with early adolescent obesity. Specifically, within Canada, student factors and school structures, policies, and programs that were associated with either higher or lower levels of child and adolescent overweight or obesity were determined. The study utilized the 2001/2002 Canadian Health Behaviour in School-Aged Children (HBSC) data to focus on school level and individual factors related to student physical health. Hierarchical Linear Modeling (HLM) was used to statistically analyze the multilevel data. The findings suggest that, while physical activity and diet variables were associated with obesity as measured by Body Mass Index (BMI), the strongest associations were with attitudinal variables: self-perception of body at the student level, and average school self-confidence at the school level.
