Thesis (M.Ed.)--York University (Canada), 2008.
In response to public concern that education for boys is currently "in crisis," recent research has focused on how masculinity as a social construction has influenced boys' literacy practices. Likewise, this study investigates the lived experiences of boys and teachers in a boys' book club, exploring, through a post-structural feminist lens, how traditional masculinity is understood, constructed, reinforced and contested by educators and students. Data were gathered through the observation of Primary and Junior Boys' Book Club sessions as well as interviews with supervising teachers and student participants. This paper argues that teacher and student conceptualizations of masculinity may influence the reading attitudes, behaviours and text choices of male readers. Additionally, this paper suggests how critical literacy strategies can assist students and educators in deconstructing, rather than reinforcing, hegemonic gendered discourses in the classroom.
