Thesis (M.A.)--Royal Roads University (Canada), 2008.
This community-based action research study examined the role of Emergency Medical Dispatchers (EMDs) and their contribution to the British Columbia Ambulance Service's (BCAS) performance. Participants included BCAS staff, allied agencies, and the public. An online survey and two focus groups provided quantitative and qualitative data investigating EMD competencies, cultural influences, and EMD performance in relation to the overall performance of the BCAS. Findings were that the EMD role enjoys a high level of respect, but lacks formal recognition; communications centre roles require clarification; specific competencies of a successful EMD are not understood; and EMD selection and training processes do not provide the best outcomes for individuals or the organization. Recommendations include establishing a competency-based profile for communications centre roles, implementing an education program about EMDs and communications centres, developing meaningful performance measures, including the EMD role in the Health Emergency Act, and conducting a follow-up survey with BCAS staff.
