Toward a behavioral account: A feedback protocol for the acquisition of absolute pitch.
- 37 p.
Adviser: Linda J. Hayes.
Thesis (M.A.)--University of Nevada, Reno, 2004.
This study examined the potential for the acquisition of absolutle pitch by means of conditional discrimination through exposure to pitches their corresponding pitch labels and feedback delivery contingent on correct pitch production. During baseline, subjects heard pitches played on a piano and were asked to sing them at delays 0 sec, 5 min., 30 min. and 3 hrs. Next, subjects were given tapes of 4 previously unfamiliar songs and were instructed to play the tapes on calibrated equipment for 40 listening and 40 sing along trials. After these trials, subjects were instructed to sing the first notes of the songs and were given feedback in the form of printed letter labels. After each note had been required, sung and either reinforced or ignored 32 trials depending upon accuracy, the subjects were asked to only sing the note corresponding to each printed pitch label. Results indicated improvement in both subjects with improved accuracy retained after delay.
