Thesis (M.A.)--University of North Texas, 1995.
In this study a comprehensive multivariate time-series model is built to explain American foreign policy toward the People's Republic of China, during the cold war era from 1948 to 1989. Several continuous independent variables and intervention variables are proposed to have affected the amount of cooperativeness or hostility in U.S. foreign policy toward China during the cold war era. Two data sets (COPDAB and WEIS) and Box-Jenkins transfer and intervention functions time-series modelling procedures are used to test the proposed relationships. The findings of this study suggest that U.S. China policy during the cold war era exhibits a mixed pattern of bureaucratic inertia and reciprocity. In addition, the continuous independent variable measuring conflict and cooperation in the bilateral relationship between China and Taiwan, and the intervention variables of the Korean War and the Nixon administration are found to have statistically significant impacts on U.S China policy in the COPDAB model covering the 1948-1978 period. In the WEIS model covering the 1966-1989 period, the bilateral relationship between the U.S. and the Soviet Union, and the bilateral relationship between China and the Soviet Union are found to have statistically significant impacts on U.S. China policy.Subjects--Topical Terms:
