Ethnic minorities and their mental health needs --
Multicultural aspects of psychological services is currently one of the hottest topics in the mental health profession. Counseling American Minorities provides exactly the kind of information that students in training, as well as practitioners, need in order to provide culturally sensitive services. The book provides information about the history and experiences, physical and mental health needs, and treatment preferences of African Americans, American Indians, Asian Americans, and Hispanic Americans and examines how psychological service providers might better provide mental health services to members of each group. Chapters related to each of these four ethnic groups have been written by multicultural experts who have first-hand personal and professional exposure to the experiences and needs of members of each group. Two case exercises that can be used to stimulate class discussion appear at the end of each chapter about a specific ethnic group. The companion book, Counseling Diverse Populations, can be used in conjunction with this book for classes that cover sensitivity to non-ethnic as well as ethnic minorities.
