The central idea of this study is that the construal of lyrical means yields a thematic effect. This theory is based upon the practice of "Musical Reading": In effects of polyphony recoverable at the surface by recurrent means, there is an accrual of meaning with effect. The lyrical thematic event is that in which a reference to the meaning accrued in the effect coincides with our response to the effect. "Lyrical Thematics" defines both the events and the engagement in which our experience of larger meaning or theme is determined in the literary work. In keeping with this claim, the study implements a strategy in reading William Faulkner's Light in August. It shows that the novel has much more than the disparate unity of critical consensus, by showing that this greater unity is polyphonic. Effects of polyphony are the common measure of the characters and the actions, and these are carried by particular verbal figures of accrued effect. In one of these, the formation of an identity (Joe Christmas) is delineated as a rotating composite of elements-a figural narrative. In another, it is discovered of the patterns of lives, that the patterns of consciousness at their source are expressive of the same internal event "Memory believes before knowing remembers." Unity is thus established within and between actions. In culmination, effects of polyphony that are narrative and/or figural are read in conjunction as "Figures in a Round." Deployment of lyrical thematics throughout the novel both proves their structuring effect and provides thematic means in support of an original claim for the theme of Light in August, the "fates of consciousness.".
