Overall, across a wide variety of research methods and measures, the evidence suggests that personality traits are related to leadership performance, although the relationships are fairly weak. Past research is limited in two ways, however. First, past research has relied on global criteria, which cover all aspects of performance, and therefore are unlikely to be related to a personality trait, which covers a restricted domain of behavior. In addition, past research has relied on self ratings of personality. These two factors--the reliance on global measures of performance and the reliance on self ratings of personality--may have obscured the true extent to which personality is related to leadership performance. The primary objectives of this investigation are twofold: examine the relationships between personality traits and homogeneous dimensions of leadership performance, and examine whether observer ratings of personality yield higher validity than self ratings of personality in relation to leadership performance. The results indicate that observer ratings of personality are more highly correlated with leadership performance than are self ratings of personality. In addition, the results indicate the relationship between personality and leadership performance is complex. Not all personality traits are related to leadership, and not all aspects of leadership are related to personality. However, the relationships that do occur between the domains are sensible and predictable.
