Korean phonology includes an unusual, among the world's languages, three-way contrast between tense, lax, and aspirated voiceless stops and affricates, and a two-way distinction between tense and lax voiceless fricatives. The purpose of the present set of studies was to investigate developmental changes in production skills for Korean stops, affricates, and alveolar fricatives as well as in perception skills for stops and alveolar fricatives in monolingual Korean children between ages 4 and 8. Five groups of ten Korean children each and one group of ten Korean adults produced monosyllabic Korean words with /a/, /i/, and /u/ following the consonants. Results indicated that four-year-old Korean children produced the tense-lax-aspirated distinction between stops and affricates with over 90% accuracy. However, the tense-lax distinction in fricatives was not learned with 90% accuracy even at age 8. The predominant age-appropriate error pattern was dentalizations when the target fricatives were followed by /a/ and /u/, occurring until age 8. The next most frequent error pattern was tense-lax substitutions when tense /s*/ was followed by /i/. An ANOVA for each of the acoustic characteristics of fricative production (frication duration, aspiration duration, centroid, (H1-H2), (H1*-H2*), and (H1-F2)) revealed that the seven and eight year olds produced acoustic characteristics that were generally similar to those of adults. A descriptive analysis demonstrated that the four and five year olds were distinct in some acoustic characteristics from the seven and eight year olds. The perception study revealed that not only discrimination of the differences between alveolar fricatives but also between stops was still challenging to children between ages 4 and 6, despite mastered productions of stops. Discrimination for both distinctions was most affected when the consonant pairs were followed by different vowels but the impact of context decreased with age. Also, eight year olds tended to show more adult-like patterns in phonemically distinguishing /s/ and /s*/ than younger children. The present study extends previous findings for Korean speech development with knowledge about Korean children's patterns in acoustic correlates for the two-way distinction between alveolar fricatives and discrimination skills for that distinction as well as for the three-way distinctions between stops.
