The goal of this dissertation is (i) to deepen the understanding of the notion of conditionality with crosslinguistic data from Mandarin and Japanese, languages which offer unique tools to look into the phenomena that have not/cannot be examined in languages such as English; and (ii) to understand the nature of the notion of evaluativity from a formal semantic-pragmatic perspective. To address the two issues, the dissertation examines the restrictions of three conditional expressions from Mandarin and Japanese: Mandarin jiu-conditionals, ba-conditionals, and Japanese tewa-conditionals. Mandarin is known for commonly expressing conditional meaning without an identifiable 'if'. I show that this type of conditionals in Mandarin is actually conditional juxtapositions, and the source of their conditional meaning is the topical status of their first sentence. I argue that jiu-conditionals belong to this type, with additional felicity conditions imposed by jiu. Next, I explore the interactions of discourse particle ba and conditional juxtapositions in Mandarin. I show that ba-conditionals convey an additional evaluative flavor and exhibit sensitivity to preceding discourse components. Lastly, I further investigate the nature of evaluative inferences by examining Japanese tewa-conditionals, and propose a connection between evaluativity and what I term "weak practicality". I show that conditional constructions without overtly marked if in languages such as Mandarin and Japanese exhibit more interactions with context and discourse.
