This dissertation examines representations of rural China in independent cinema after 2000, exploring how and why the countryside is portrayed in specific ways. As China's rapid urbanization has overshadowed its deepening rural crisis, independent filmmakers-empowered by the widespread availability of digital video (DV) technology since the late 1990s-have turned their lenses toward the dramatic transformations in rural society. Departing from earlier idealized depictions of the rural, these films create a visual archive that addresses the social, environmental, moral, and cultural challenges facing rural communities. Through a democratizing way of filmmaking, they give peasants the right to participate in the production of filmic images about themselves, and provide a cinematic space in which rural people are recognized and can resonate with. Suddenly, the vivacity of the texture of rural quotidian life, with multiple voices emanating from multiple concrete localities, enters the cinematic space as never before and informed the discourse of the countryside in contemporary China.Focusing on independent films by mainland directors set in the countryside and reflecting villagers' daily lives, this study categorizes the works into four thematic chapters: rural sexuality, rural landscape, rural morality, and rural Christianity. Together, these films reveal how modernization has changed China's rural society in various aspects. Situating these films within their historical, political, and social contexts, this dissertation analyzes their textual and cinematic specificities to explore how independent cinema opens aesthetic and critical space for engaging with rural culture. Ultimately, this project highlights the unique contribution of rural cinema to understanding the complex transformations of Chinese society and culture today.
