This thesis aims to connect Friedrich Nietzsche's interconnected meditations on aesthetics and nationalism with the fictional works of Franz Kafka and establish a relationality between their consideration of nationalistic aesthetic forms. In his Beyond Good and Evil, Nietzsche determines that national literature merely "reproduces an image" (BGE, §192), and I argue that Kafka's creation of a 'minor literature' - as theorized by Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari in Kafka: Toward a Minor Literature - can be read as his own creation of a literary form free from "fatherlandishness."In order to accomplish this, my project is twofold. I first establish that Nietzsche's "Peoples and Fatherlands" chapter of Beyond Good and Evil is explicitly concerned with art and image reproductivity by employing Roland Barthes' theoretical explication of the studium and the punctum in his Camera Lucida. I then transition to a close reading of Kafka's corpus of 'minor literature[s]' - "The Cares of a Family Man," "In the Penal Colony," and "A Crossbreed"- that reflect his creation of nonnational, nonreproductive aesthetics.
