The particular status of texts in the print era is a result of complex processes of production and consumption. Authored manuscripts, having passed through revision, editing, typesetting, layout, production, commodification and marketing, are perceived to be direct communication to a reader. Processes of reception are the largely unconscious activities of visually scanning marks, spaces, lines and pages, silently voicing those graphemes into phonemes, hearing and then apprehending that interior textual voice, and finally envisioning the sense of that discourse into an imaginary of characters, scenes, speeches, thoughts, images, events. Widespread literacy, and the automaticity of sustained silent reading in the print era, as affordances of the conventions of print - standardized orthography, punctuation, text blocking, pagination, as well as normative syntax, typography and page design - have been contemporaneous with, if not wholly constitutive of, the unitary, rational, Enlightenment subject, and its interior and linguistic model of thought. Both literary theory and literary experimentation have challenged this textually constructed subjectivity, but have failed to seriously recognize or adequately theorize the full potential of visibly disruptive textual experiments to arrest and trouble the unconscious automaticities of readers' interior voicings. This dissertation surveys the parallel histories of literary theory and textual-material literary experimentation, throughout the linguistic turn in modern, post-modern and new materialist frames. Methodologically this is neither a close reading of several exemplary texts, nor a distant reading account of trends in publication and readership. Rather, it is something in between. A broad survey of theoretical and literary works is considered, but with a narrow focus on visible textual-material constructions and deconstructions of subjectivity and of textual objects. Disruptive and visually apparent techniques that transgress print-era conventions of syntax, punctuation, orthography, typography, lexicography, page layout and book design, will be emphasized along with close attention to parallel theoretical concerns and critical reception. This emphasis will uncover important philosophical, aesthetic and political challenges to the hegemonic institution of Enlightenment rationality and its dominant mode of discourse in normative textual practices.
