As a man of many hats, the painter, writer, art conservator, school inspector Adalbert Stifter (1805-1868) also got deeply involved in the political struggle in the Habsburg Empire during and after the Revolution of 1848. This dissertation project excavates a concept of enlightenment in Stifter's journalistic and literary writings and explores the political dimension of his understanding of self-perfection (Bildung) as a moral obligation. Unlike his later work as educator and school inspector, this brief stint as political commentator along with the political image of this-ostensibly apolitical-writer of the German canon have been neglected in the more recent scholarship. Stifter reminded his compatriots at length of the duty to self-perfection in various newspapers articles that aim at clarifying key political concepts to a lay audience. This dissertation project follows the general discussion of moral perfection, rationalization, and social upheaval in Stifter's oeuvre around 1848 and connects it to discourses on the Enlightenment (Aufklärung) in the philosophical and aesthetic debates of German-speaking countries in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. This project further adds to the extensive scholarship on Adalbert Stifter's oeuvre by delineating how Stifter's understanding of self-perfection as means to overcome political crisis has resonated with Stifter's readers on the political right. It outlines how the legacy of Enlightenment has shaped the political biases in literary criticism during the time of Stifter's popularization and political appropriation in the twentieth century and traces the more nuanced discussion of his many biographical and intellectual connections to the so-called Age of Reason over the course of the twentieth century.
