The poet Walt Whitman stands at the beginning of a rich and complicated history of frank sexual expression in American literature. The significance of Whitman's groundbreaking treatment of same-sex friendship, intimacy, and desire has been well-documented, but one element of this expression that critics have overlooked is how deeply melancholic it can be. Using Judith Butler's interpretation of Sigmund Freud's concept of melancholia, this thesis sets out first to establish the terms through which melancholia is made legible in artistic expression broadly speaking, then to identify and understand exactly how this melancholia manifests itself in Walt Whitman's work. I identify the aesthetic expression of this specific phenomenon as "queer melancholy." The opening section of this thesis, titled "Queer Melancholy and the American Tradition," sets out first to explain the psychological processes that produce melancholia in queer individuals, then to examine how those processes, which are directly linked to concepts of time and death, can manifest in an artist's work. The second section of this thesis, titled "In Paths Untrodden: Whitman and the Birth of Queer American Expression," focuses on Whitman's 1859 manuscript for "Live Oak, with Moss" as the urtext of a tradition of queer melancholy, focusing on how symptoms of melancholia infiltrate the themes, gestures, and impulses of "Live Oak." The ultimate aim of this project will be to argue how this text inadvertently inaugurates a tradition of melancholic expression that can be traced in almost all domains of queer art spanning the last one hundred fifty years, including the poetry of Hart Crane, the fiction of James Baldwin, the installations of Felix Gonzales-Torres, the music of Frank Ocean, and the films of Andrew Haigh. This project establishes how a queer subject's relationship with love and loss is represented in similar textual, structural, and thematic ways across disparate mediums, and how all of these examples share the same narrative impulses of a single artistic forefather: Walt Whitman.
