In a global society built on the principle of "nation-states," nationalism affects every aspect of political life and interaction, and the Russo-Ukrainian War is no exception. The interactions between Ukrainian and Russian nationalism have revealed the intricacies of the relationship between a recently-independent state and its former imperial ruler. Ukrainian nationalism's historical ties to democratization and liberalization have led to the reorientation of Ukrainian political life, foreign relations, and national identity toward NATO and the European Union. This reorientation sparked imperial-nationalism-fueled backlash from Russian elites and triggered Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February of 2022. My research examines both popular and official nationalisms in Ukraine and Russia. It tracks the historical events and beliefs upon which contemporary nationalist sentiments are built and discusses the impacts of those sentiments on the Russo-Ukrainian War. I argue that the contrasting reactions of the Ukrainian and Russian governments to popular nationalism reveal the differences between the effects of bottom-up and top-down nationalist ideology on the war effort. The interplay of Ukrainian and Russian nationalism uncovers new ways of examining the interactions between nationalisms of newly independent states and their former colonizers. It could lead to a greater understanding of the importance of developing nationalism in post-imperial states on a broader scale. Reactions to developing nationalisms in post-imperial states could be dependent on the historical precedents and foundations for those nationalisms. Their acceptance in the international community could potentially be tied to the ways in which they developed and the political ideologies to which they subscribe, adding yet another layer to the intricacies of contemporary international politics.
