The aging, perimenopausal body is one ignored and disregarded both in medical discourse and feminist movements due to the intersection of misogyny and ageism. The result is a monolithic representation of the perimenopausal experience, confusing the symptoms of fluctuating hormones with a prescription of how the perimenopausal body must behave. In this thesis, I turn to literary representations of perimenopause through Doris Lessing's The Summer Before the Dark (1973), Fran Littlewood's Amazing Grace Adams (2023), and Miranda July's All Fours (2024) to understand how perimenopause brings forth an acknowledgement of aging and thus mortality which is at odds with the construction of western ideas of femininity that privilege youth. Perimenopause can be a time of mourning missed opportunities as well as no longer being favored by the male gaze which suggests the dissatisfaction with middle-aged comes from the narrow constructions of femininity. However, the protagonists of the perimenopausal novel refuse to accept that life is over at forty-five. Instead, these texts challenge the stereotypes associated with perimenopause. Therefore, perimenopausal literature offers a space to explore one's appearance, rage, and desire unabashedly and without fear, no longer considering what the patriarchy privileges.
