In this dissertation, I argue that werewolves are nexuses of legend, monstrosity, and queerness that expose the complicated understandings of categories, binaries, and definitions that cultures perceive as fixed. By drawing together monster theory, queer and trans theories, and folklore and legend studies, I identify these sites of identity construction and social destabilization in texts including classical Greek and Roman writings, Norse sagas, German legends, werewolf court trial transcripts, and contemporary novels and short stories. I use the threefold structure of The Transformation, The Pack, and The Resistance to, in order, examine the fluid nature of werewolves' bodies and their impact on narratives; discuss the homosocial relationships created between werewolves and humans, specifically in the creation of masculine identity; and discuss how the contemporary novels and short stories utilize the previous two queer aspects of werewolves to create new, alternative modes of existence that resist cisheteronormative power structures and oppression.
