Burning The Closet Down is a poetic thesis defining what Queer poetry is to me-what being Queer means to me. As a Queer person living in Texas, my life changed rapidly after the presidential election in November. For a couple of moments, it became hard to find joy in this body of work. I liked the poems, I liked the collages, but the subject matter was difficult to write about without it always taking a turn to anger. As I continued working on poems in the fall, I looked for themes in my work that were consistent. I noticed a lot of Queer poetry I was reading used the lyric "I" as I do in my poetry. When I wrote poems using the lyric "I," I turned inwards to think about what it is that I want for myself in this world. I want to be understood, I do not want to be silenced, and I want to be seen. To understand Queer lyric poetry, is to understand the Gay Sublime. The Gay Sublime is writing about a world where the Queer experience is naturalized, it exists as a way for Queer folks to fit into a world that was made for others in every aspect of life. The Gay Sublime, Queer folk can explore text and imagery in our identity, it recognizes the vastness and immensity in the natural order that is defined in Sublime. Through creating visual poems and surrealism, I saw more possibilities to create not only a body of work, but a world where Queer people and ideas exist. My perception of collage changed as I ran into issues with using clippings from magazines. Instead of trying to outsource images through fair use images found online, I decided to go through personal photos and change the way that I see them. In doing so, I created a new world to live in that I never even thought possible. It changed my perspective on my overall journey and even changed how I see myself.
