This dissertation argues that dreams are an understudied element of modern Jewish poetics and examines their function as tools for the construction of modern Jewish identity in the literary works of Heinrich Heine and Theodor Herzl. Beginning with the importance of dreams in the Hebrew Bible, this dissertation constructs an abbreviated genealogy of dreams in order to illustrate the affinity between dreams and the Jewish exilic condition. Dreams resonate deeply with the Jewish history of exile; as such, dreams are productive spaces in which new kinds of Jewish identity can be explored. As I argue over the course of Part One, Heine uses dreams across his oeuvre to make visible a new relationship to Jewish tradition that runs counter to the traditional-rabbinical privileging of halakhah over haggadah, while at the same time presenting versions of Jewishness in which multiplicity and difference take precedence over uniformity and homogeneity. Correspondingly, in Part Two I explore the ways in which Herzl uses the dream in his novel Altneuland (1902) to stage the dialectic between German and Jewish culture and to attempt their synthesis: unlike in Der Judenstaat (1896), Herzl performs this staging in the sphere of dreams rather than in political reality. Ultimately, this dissertation seeks to fill a lacuna in contemporary literary studies by advancing a cultural study that departs from the Freudian paradigms that have generally dominated the analysis of dreams for more than a century.
