My dissertation examines the relationship between religion in art and politics in the work of Andrei Platonov during the first decade under the Communist regime of the USSR. I concentrate my analysis on the intertextual relationship between Platonov's work and its biblical referents across a 10-year period (1920-1930) demonstrating a shift from his early work in which he uses religious imagery as an instrument to attack prerevolutionary institutions towards his later orientation that uses religious imagery to subvert the Soviet utopian building project. Platonov purposefully interweaves biblical themes into his work and in doing so he either comments on, supports, challenges, or subverts the growing anti-religious orthodoxy in the State controlled production of art. This engagement with religious themes in Soviet art is significant because assumptions are often made that the Soviet Union and 20th century socialism intentionally broke with the religious inclinations of the past, however, my work illustrates that religious themes, in fact, frequently formed the countervailing underpinnings of both Communist propaganda and artists' attempts to critique new forms of politicization and socialization. I argue that Platonov uses biblical imagery to underscore the similarities between Soviet Communism and Christianity in their mutual failings to deliver on the promise of redemption for human society. This is not to say that Platonov lost faith in the perfectibility of humanity and society, but only in the ability of the Party as it was then constituted to achieve this end. I aim to demonstrate a turn in Platonov's thinking in relation to the evolving Soviet cultural context in its movement from the policies of the early years of the Revolution and War Communism towards the first Five-Year Plan and high Stalinism and his treatment of religious themes across this period. I divide my study on Platonov into three sections; analysis of select stories, articles, and poetry from Platonov's early work (the Voronezh years 1920-1925), a section each on Chevengur (1928) and "Kotlovan" (1930). I analyze Judeo-Christian imagery in Platonov's body of work as he develops as an artist, paying special attention to direct references and conceptual allusions across the following themes 1) rhetorical features and verbal choices that resemble the language of the Bible, 2) apocalypse, 3) eschatology, and 4) resurrection.
