When Ukraine became independent in 1991, the government's treatment of Crimean Tatars was largely dismissive, and the indigenous people of Crimea did not receive national support or recognition. However, since the Maidan protests and Russian annexation of Crimea in 2014, Ukraine has redefined its identity and worked to incorporate Crimean Tatars into its national framework. This thesis explores the relationship between the Crimean Tatars, Ukraine and the development of Ukrainian nationalism and civil society after 1991. It questions how Crimean Tatars fit within post-Maidan Ukraine and whether or not Ukraine has changed its treatment of Crimean Tatars in a positive way. I argue that the rapprochement between Ukraine and the Crimean Tatars is a major indicator of Ukraine's establishment of civil society and that their position as a modern, multiethnic and European-leaning nation rests on the treatment of groups like Crimean Tatars.
