The purpose of this study was to investigate if perceptions of rank disparity, psychological safety, and autonomous motivation predict team effectiveness in a veteran service member population. A quantitative nonexperimental research design using convenience sampling was employed to address the research questions. Using the survey platform Qualtrics, 188 veterans were recruited to complete four surveys: (a) the power distance subscale of the Individual Cultural Values Scale (b) the Team Psychological Safety Scale, the Multidimensional Work Motivation Scale, and the Team Effectiveness Survey. The results of the multiple linear regression determined that the combination of perception of rank disparity, psychological safety, and autonomous motivation predicted team effectiveness, F(3, 184) = 47.457, p < .001. Additionally, only psychological safety, t(184) = 6.493, p < .001 and autonomous motivation, t(184) = 7.288, p < .001 were found to be unique predictors of team effectiveness. The results of a stepwise regression analysis showed that the best predictor model included the combination of psychological safety and autonomous motivation, F(2, 185) = 68.443, p < .001. The findings showed that perception of rank disparity were not significant predictors of team effectiveness. Future researchers should examine if research with participants from current, intact military teams would produce deeper insight into the factors that predict team effectiveness.
