Guided by Role Congruity Theory, the present study aimed to examine the relationship between gender role attitudes and evaluations of perceived grit across serviceperson gender in the military. This research is important as grit has received attention for its potential in predicting successful outcomes in the military, while gender- based evaluative discrepancies of non-aptitude traits has had mixed findings in military literature. Participants were asked to read a brief vignette depicting either a military serviceman, woman, or person on deployment. Participants rated the serviceperson's perceived grit, and completed questionnaires related to broad gender role attitudes and specific attitudes towards women in the military. Results from primary analyses indicated no significant difference in ratings of perceived grit across serviceperson gender, as well as non-significance of gender role attitude's influence on those evaluations. Counter to role congruity theory, this suggests that regardless of personal attitudes regarding women in the military, respondents maintained professional objectivity in their evaluations of perceived grit in servicemen versus servicewomen. Post-hoc analyses of the military sub-sample, however, showed a significant interaction effect of broad gender role attitudes and serviceperson gender on perceived grit. Findings and their implications are discussed.
