Horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing have increased natural gas exploration within the Marcellus Shale. A combination of top-down approaches and a bottom-up approach is implemented to monitor atmospheric methane near a well-pad site in West Virginia. Continuous measurements 6 months prior to the start of any drilling activity is used to parametrize a model for the baseline methane concentrations. Methane isotopic data assists in determining between the sources of methane concentration - biological (microbes in streams or livestock) or geological (shale gas activity). Finally, a large eddy simulation of a passive scalar is used to investigate the possible emission rate of atmospheric methane using passive scalar transport. Most of the observed values that exceed the 95-percentile confidence limit of the modeled baseline concentrations are during the horizontal and vertical drilling periods and show a typical geological isotopic ratio. This work aids in quantifying greenhouse gas emissions due to anthropogenic activity. Policymakers may employ research such as this to mitigate future leaks from shale development.
