Charleston County, South Carolina is primarily a rural county with a total land area of 2.378 km2 (918 square miles) with no more than 4% of that being urban/suburban in unincorporated areas (U.S. Census Bureau, 2022) (Charleston County Government, 2019). The roughly 93 km2 (36 square miles) of urban and suburban areas present significant challenges to stormwater management due to aging and outdated infrastructure, tight or nonexistent spaces for infrastructure, and the ability of public works and property owners to install new drainage structures and upgrade existing infrastructure. One area of Charleston County that sees a number of drainage complaints is on Delmar Street, in the Tiger Swamp neighborhood west of the Ashley River near US 17 (Savannah Highway). This research utilized computer simulations to test how various conceptual green infrastructure scenarios would improve overall drainage. Low Impact Development methods, specifically rainwater collection and vegetative swales, were modeled with a rain event simulation using EPA's SWMM software to see how the identified problem area could be improved. This work embodied the goals of sustainable green infrastructure methods that can complement existing gray (traditional engineered) infrastructure, rather than replacing it. Modeling these methods to find the best and most feasible practices that can be implemented by stakeholders such as property owners and governmental agencies is key to successful stormwater management.
